Festivals

India is known for its rich cultural diversity, and as a result, numerous festivals are celebrated throughout the country. The dates of these festivals vary each year as they are often based on the lunar calendar. Here are some major festivals celebrated in India:
Ram Navami: Rama Navami is celebrated on the ninth day of the Chaitra month (Chaitra Navami) and the birth of Lord Rama is celebrated as Rama Navami. The festival holds significant importance for followers of the Vaishnavism tradition, and it serves as a time for reflection on the values and teachings embodied by Lord Rama. Rama Navami is celebrated not only in India but around the world.

Diwali (Deepavali): Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is one of the most popular Hindu festivals celebrated across the country. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
Holi: Holi, the festival of colours, marks the arrival of spring. People celebrate by throwing coloured powders and water at each other, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

Navratri and Durga Puja: Navratri is a nine-night festival dedicated to the goddess Durga. In some parts of India, especially in West Bengal, it culminates with Durga Puja, a grand celebration featuring elaborate decorations and cultural performances.

Ganesh Chaturthi: This festival honours Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom and prosperity. Large and elaborate idols of Ganesha are installed in homes and public places, and after a certain period, they are immersed in water.
Raksha Bandhan: A festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters, where sisters tie a protective thread (rakhi) around their brothers' wrists, and brothers give gifts in return.

Janmashtami: This festival celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. Devotees fast, sing hymns and participate in various cultural events.

Pongal/Makar Sankranti: Celebrated in South India, Pongal marks the harvest festival. It is also known as Makar Sankranti in other parts of India and involves flying kites, feasting, and traditional rituals.
